ADVANCED SLEEP PHASE SYNDROME

INTRODUCTION:

Advanced sleep phase syndrome (ASPS), also known as the advanced sleep-phase type (ASPT) of circadian rhythm sleep disorder, is a condition in which patients feel very sleepy and go to bed early in the evening (e.g. 6:00–8:00 p.m.) and wake up very early in the morning (e.g. 1:00–3:00 a.m.).ASPS is more frequently encountered in the elderly and in post-menopausal women than in younger people.

 

SYMPTOMS:

The 6 symptoms listed below:

·         Early awakening

·         Early night time sleep onset

·         Altered sleep-wake cycle

·         Inability to stay awake until the desired bedtime or inability to remain asleep until the desired time of awakening

·         There is a phase advance of the major sleep episode in relation to the desired time for sleep

·         Symptoms are present for at least 3 months

CAUSES:

It can be caused by mutation of the PER2 or CSNK1D gene. A family history of the disorder and advanced age are risk factors for advanced sleep phase syndrome. The cause of sporadic cases is not known, but may be due to new, spontaneous mutations in these genes.

TREATMENT:

Advanced sleep phase syndrome is treated with chronotherapy or bright light therapy
